Julie Murphy's handmade décor for the home embraces the hardness of rocks and the softness of textiles. Since 2003, she is best known for her palm-sized portrayals of Newfoundland architecture, which are carefully cut and sculpted from rocks that she collects from the ocean's edge. The saltbox and biscuit box houses are hand painted in vivid colours and based on historical examples, some of which lean precariously. Murphy admits to spending hours driving around outport communities soaking up the inspiration of the ramshackle houses. She also creates textiles for the home, most out of recycled materials. A gentleman's cardigan or a vintage lady's swing-coat may give birth to a unique table runner, trivet, a set of coasters or one of her unique textile brooches. When time allows, she enjoys her original passions of watercolour and acrylic painting either alone or combined with lino-cut printing.
